Craig Levein has told his players that last weekend’s performance against Ross County cannot be repeated, not just against Motherwell tonight but ever again.
The Jambos were held to a home stalemate by the Staggies last Saturday in an outing that the manager will use as a reference point going forward to remind the team of what is not acceptable.
They gear up to take on Motherwell this evening in the Betfred Cup 2nd Round and Craig insists his side will be going all out to make the quarter-finals for the second year in a row.
Speaking at his pre-match press conference, he said: “From my point of view, Saturday’s performance is a benchmark for me in that we can’t go anywhere near that this season again.
“And I’ll be reminding the players of what happens if we go into a game less than fully focused on our jobs, and on the training that we’ve done during the week.
“That will sit for the remainder of the season with me as something that can’t be repeated.
“It’s a pivotal game (tonight) in that there is only three competitions and I don’t want to end up out of this competition at this stage. I’m sure that Stephen will be saying the same.
“We recognise that we’ll need to be good to get through in this game. I would never ever treat any of the cup games lightly.
“Three competitions and not taking one of them seriously is madness. We’ll put out the best team we possibly can and we’ll do everything we can to win the game.
“We haven’t hit our stride yet and it just takes one win to get us off and running. I look at the quality of player that we’ve got and I look at the depth of our squad this year and, touch wood, we don’t get too many problems injury-wise and I feel really positive about the season ahead.”
