Connor Smith: I didn't think twice

10th July 2019

Connor Smith revealed he snatched Craig Levein's hand off when he was offered a new three-year deal earlier this month.

The 17-year-old penned the contract extension following his breakthrough into the first-team, which saw him make another three appearances before the end of last season - including his full debut in the Edinburgh derby.

"As soon as I got offered a new deal, I didn't think twice about signing it," Connor admitted. "Hopefully, the gaffer sees me as one of his players and I'm involved next year. Obviously, I'm delighted to sign another three-year deal."

The youngster was speaking exclusively to HeartsTV at the end of the Jambos' pre-season trip to Ireland, where Connor played against both Shelbourne and Glenavon.

"It has been very hard, especially at the start," he said. It's been the hardest pre-season for me. Coming over to Ireland, everyone thought it would be games and that but it's still been running hard. It's always good to get game-time with the first team as well."

Reflecting on the derby debut, in which the midfielder flourished, Connor admitted he looked close to home for advice ahead of kick-off.

"Before the game, you get a wee bit nervous. As soon as the game starts, you forget about everything and play your own game. I used to go with whatever my dad said, he told me to forget about the fans and play my normal game."
