Club marks 100th anniversary of the Somme

1st July 2016

John Robertson lays wreath at Contalmaison as club remembers those who fell at the Somme.

This morning the Directors, players, staff and supporters of Heart of Midlothian Football Club remember the sacrifice made by our "Bravest Team".

Three of our players, Duncan Currie, Ernest Ellis and Henry Watt of the 16th Royal Scots, or McCrae's Battalion as it was known, were killed at the battle of the Somme on this very day 100 years ago.

More of the team and hundreds of our fans would sadly share their fate and many more returned home either wounded, mentally or physically traumatised. Their lives were never the same again.

Club legend John Robertson laid a wreath in France this morning at the McCrae's Battalion Cairn in Contalmaison on behalf of the club. John also laid a wreath on behalf of the Foundation of Hearts.

They will be forever in our hearts and at the going down of the sun, we will remember them.
