Hearts Women were defeated 3-0 by title-chasing Celtic in this afternoon’s SWPL match at K-Park in East Kilbride, despite an excellent first half performance.
After last week’s heavy defeat to Rangers, the Jambos were much improved in the opening half with a really disciplined display that frustrated their full-time opponents, who had just the two chances through Izzy Atkinson and Jacynta Galabadaarachchi, with Ailey Tebbitt producing two top saves to deny them.
Following the half-time interval, the Jambos started to tire and Celtic began to exploit the spaces in the maroons’ rearguard, with Rachel Donaldson volleying home from a Jacynta cross. Hearts attempted to respond when substitute Lia Tweedie did well to flick on a ball through to Amelie Birse, with the young striker firing just over the bar.
Jacynta nearly added a second when her long range effort was brilliantly tipped onto the bar by the impressive Tebbitt, but Sarah Ewens had the easy task of burying the rebound, and Ewens would add a second with four minutes to play as she headed home a cross from Tegan Bowie on the left.
Despite the result, the improvements in the side are clear to see and Andy Kirk’s side will hope to add a second win of the season next weekend when they welcome Forfar Farmington to Oriam.
