Heart of Midlothian 3-2 Kilmarnock
Monday 8th October 2018, KO 14:00 | Reserve Cup | Oriam
Hearts made it two wins from two in the Reserve League Cup with a 3-2 victory over Kilmarnock this afternoon.
Andy Kirk’s side twice came from behind to take all three points, with the visitors reduced to ten men in the second half.
The Jambos were first to threaten, with Aidan Keena hitting a half-volley over the bar before Lewis Moore’s angled snapshot was saved by Devlin Mackay, who then made a smart block from Craig Wighton’s rebound.
Mackay again denied Moore after he was threaded through by Wighton, and moments later the winger dragged an effort wide after he was found by Cammy Logan’s pinpoint cross.
It was all Hearts inside the first half hour, with Wighton flashing a header wide from Bartlomiej Gajda’s cross, before Moore showed great tenacity to win possession and curl a shot on goal which was pushed away by Mackay.
At the other end, Kevin Silva denied Oliver McDonald but McDonald got the upper hand in the 36th minute, slotting low into the bottom corner after being teed up by Greg Kiltie.
Three minutes before half time it was 1-1. Danny Amankwaa carried the ball into the box before finding Cochrane in space, and he floated a first-time shot straight into the top corner, giving Mackay no chance.
Nine minutes into the second-half a Keena volley stung the palms of Mackay, before Silva saved a Kiltie effort.
Keena then slipped Moore through but his shot was saved by the legs of Mackay.
Kilmarnock were reduced to ten men when Ross Millen was given a straight red for an over-the-ball lunge on Logan which left the Hearts man crumpled on the deck.
The visitors then took the lead. Jack Byrne’s clever through ball found Ian Wilson on the overlap and he stabbed beyond Silva.
Substitute Dario Zanatta went close to restoring parity but he fired straight at Mackay after getting on the end of Wighton’s reverse pass.
With nine minutes remaining, Hearts got back on level terms. Substitute Euan Henderson’s corner was knocked into the six-yard box by a blue shirt and Zanatta was there to stab the ball into the back of the net.
Two minutes later it was 3-2. Zanatta tore down the left to send a ball into the box for Logan, and with the outside of his right boot he sent the ball over the head of Mackay and into the net.
The win means Hearts have won their opening two Reserve League Cup Group matches, after last month beating city rivals Hibs.
