Match Report

Hearts were held to a 1-1 draw by Dundee at Tynecastle on Saturday.

John Souttar’s superb opener had the Jambos in front at the interval but a late Jason Cummings equaliser ensured it would be a point apiece as Hearts went top of the cinch Premiership.

After last weekend’s dramatic draw at Ibrox, Robbie Neilson named an unchanged side with Liam Boyce continuing to lead the line alongside Barrie McKay and Ben Woodburn.

The opening stages saw Hearts dominate the ball and Woodburn was looking sharp, trying his luck from distance on a number of occasions but failing to hit the target.

Hearts stepped up the urgency and were close to taking the lead on 25 minutes when Michael Smith whipped in a corner that Boyce nodded against the bar, while last weekend’s hero Craig Halkett’s follow-up was cleared off the line.

The Jambos did eventually take the lead after a moment of magic from Souttar. Boyce’s neat footwork found Smith on the right, he passed inside to Woodburn who nudged it to Souttar, and he arrowed a wonderful curling effort into the top corner.

Gary Mackay-Steven was introduced at the break for Woodburn, who had been booked in the first half, and he would be involved soon after. Before that, McKay nicked the ball off Charlie Adam and squared for Boyce, but a last-gasp challenge denied the striker.

On the hour, Hearts should have sealed it. Smith’s low drive was saved by Adam Legzdins, Mackay-Steven got to the rebound and his right-footed shot smacked off the post.

The game began to stretch and Dundee looked dangerous as they threw everything forward, with Cillian Sheridan’s stinging shot palmed away by Craig Gordon, but the keeper was helpless moments later when Jason Cummings somehow was able to nod home a long throw unchallenged with 7 minutes remaining.

The last stages of the game would be equally frustrating with a number of fouls breaking up play as Hearts chased a winner, but were forced to settle for a point.
