Match Report

Hearts Reserves played out an entertaining 2-2 draw with Greenock Morton at Cappielow on Monday afternoon.

This was a cracking match and for anybody that likes festy old fashioned football this was the place to be.

The hosts began proceedings on the front foot as Hearts suffered yet another injury, with Callum Flatman replacing Aaron Darge who took a back knock within the opening ten minutes. It was a straight replacement with Callum taking Aaron’s place in central defence.

Hearts fielded a youngish side that included Craig Wighton and Harry Cochrane, whilst Morton were more experienced in terms of age, with around seven of the starting X1 having a fair bit of first team action.

Following the substitution, Hearts took the game by the scruff of the neck and dominated proceedings. Connor Smith had three efforts, one deflected past a post, and two saved by ‘keeper Sam Ramsbottom, with Leeroy Makovora steering an effort past the far post. Rory Currie also had a 20 yard shot saved before the hosts, in their first serious attack, opened the scoring on seventeen minutes, Bob McHugh steering a left wing cross into the net from close range. The remainder of the half saw Hearts hold the upper hand, with both sides creating half chances.

The second half was all action stuff, with Hearts almost equalising, Smith steering a Currie assist just past, before the scores were levelled on 53 minutes, Wighton thundering a shot against the crossbar and Smith netting the rebound.

Hearts' tails were up with Currie heading a Cammy Logan cross just over the top, and not surprisingly Hearts took the lead on 75 minutes, Makovora netting a Smith pass from just inside the box.

Morton, always dangerous on the break, came close on a couple of occasions, with Ben Eardley maybe doing better than firing a shot past, and Michael Garrity having a shot saved by Kelby Mason.

Hearts always looked dangerous in attack but could not find the safety goal with a dramatic ending looming. On 87 minutes, Mason spilled a cross with Lewis McGrattin netting the loose ball, but Hearts had a chance to win the tie deep into injury time, Aidan Denholm knocking a Makovora pass over the bar from a good position. A cracking match.
