Heart of Midlothian 1-2 Greenock Morton
Tuesday 5th November 2019, KO 14:00 | League | Oriam
It was the battle of former Hearts' strikers as Andy Kirk's Jambos took on John Sutton's Morton, and it was the latter who would claim the spoils at Oriam.
Hearts dominated the first-half, but ultimately would pay for their lack of clinical chances as most efforts on goal came from outside the box.
Morton’s trialist came closest to opening the scoring in fact, after Hearts failed to deal with a long ball. It bounced kindly for the striker, who lashed his shot off the post from 25 yards.
Lewis Moore had two attempts to get Hearts ahead. His first was smothered by Wylie, whilst his second whistled over the bar from distance.
It was the visitors’ trialist who did open the scoring on the stroke of half-time. From a free-kick wide on the left, a good delivery was whipped in and Scott McGill couldn’t get his head to it. The trialist nipped in ahead of Mason to poke the ball home and give Morton the lead.
Hearts came out the blocks quickly in the second-half, getting level after eight minutes. Ryan Schiavone, who had impressed greatly on his first start for the reserves, got in behind on the right and crossed to the back-post, where Euan Henderson was waiting to tap home.
It looked like the hosts would take the lead as they continued to press Morton. Connor Smith sent in a nice cross which Ryan Schiavone headed just wide, before the youngster then hit the cross-bar.
Collecting a lovely cross from left-back Leo Watson, Schiavone found himself one-on-one and tried to chip the keeper, only to see his effort crash off the underside of the bar and go clear.
Again, the Jambos would be made to pay. A long-ball over the top caught out Darge and Baur, with the Morton trialist running through to lift it over Kelby Mason and put Morton ahead with 15 minutes to play.
Hearts huffed and puffed - and Dan Baur had a great chance at the back-post when he had a free volley, but he could only hit his effort straight at the keeper.
