Heart of Midlothian 3-1 St Mirren
Tuesday 20th August 2019, KO 14:00 | League | Oriam
The wee Jambos came from behind to pick up a deserved three points against St Mirren in the Reserve League opener at the Oriam on Tuesday afternoon.
St Mirren took the lead through the first chance of the game. Joshua Jack slipped the ball in behind Bobby Burns, straight into the path of Lewis Jamieson. He bared down on goal and as Kevin Silva rushed off his line, the striker sent a delicious chip over the American.
Despite the scoreline, Hearts dominated the first-half. Ollie Bozanic had a long-range effort saved before Alex Petkov and Harry Cochrane both went close.
David Wilson had to look alert to deny a close-range Euan Henderson shot after Anthony McDonald teed the forward off nicely.
The 18-year-old was playmaker again when he played through Lewis Moore, who cut back onto his left before Henderson lifted his shot over the bar.
Into the second-half and again Hearts continued to put pressure on the Saints goal. Bozanic had another long-range effort tipped behind the post by Wilson, whilst McDonald missed arguably Hearst best chance.
Henderson played a great one-two with Moore on the left and squared to the six-yard box, but McDonald couldn’t connect cleanly.
St Mirren did have one chance to double their lead from a Jack free-kick, but Kevin Silva produced a fantastic save to deny them – and how costly that would prove.
The Jambos took a deserved lead after a two-minute double put them in the driving seat. Firstly, McDonald slipped Henderson through on goal and the striker made no mistake, clipping it over the keeper with a cool finish.
Provider turned to scorer when young McDonald got onto the end of a Burns cut-back to slam home and it was nothing less than their play merited.
That wasn’t the end of the scoring, though. With 90 minutes on the clock, the Jambos came forward again and McDonald squared it across the box. Moore dummied nicely for substitute Connor Smith, who took a touch before curling it into the top right hand corner.
