Match Report

Hearts eased to a comfortable victory tonight at Central Park as the Jambos saw off Cowdenbeath by two goals to nil.

Early strikes - both their first for the club - from Craig Halkett and Anthony McDonald moved Hearts into top spot in the Betfred Cup Group A.

The visitors started the match brightly as Dario Zanatta played a one-two with Steven MacLean but keeper Kevin Dabrowski was out smartly to save. Michael Smith then chipped a ball forward for McDonald but the young winger’s first time volley flew just past the post.

The positive start was rewarded when Hearts took the lead on 7 minutes. Ollie Bozanic’s corner from the right was met by the head of Halkett, the defender thundering in to head home a debut goal.

McDonald then attempted to assist Conor Washington as he slid through a lovely ball for the Northern Irish striker, but Dabrowski was out to save again.

McDonald then took the initiative and scored himself. Collecting the ball, he drove forward into the Cowdenbeath half, played a one two with Washington, before sliding the ball to MacLean whose first time cross was steered home by the youngster for his first senior goal.

Bobby Burns then drilled a lovely ball through the middle for Washington but again Dabrowski was his nemesis, getting down superbly to prevent a certain goal as Hearts sought a third before the break.

The final chance fell to Christophe Berra, when the ball dropped to him at a corner, but the skipper blazed the ball over.

The second half didn’t breed many chances, but Hearts should have been home and hosed when Zanatta was played through on goal, with Washington beside him. The Canadian opted to shoot when the pass was on and Dabrowski yet again denied Hearts.

The tempo of the game dropped enormously in the second half and only the introduction of Aidan Keena brought energy to the game. Firstly, the Irish striker weaved his way into the box but Dabrowski produced a stunning save, before Keena slid in McDonald but once more, Dabrowski denied the Jambos as the game ended with a comprehensive 2-0 victory
