A tall and strong central defender, who has good passing skills and can also operate as a holding midfielder.
Although Ryan's parents come from Glasgow, the big ball-winner was born in Adelaide and has represented Australia at various levels. Indeed, in September 2009, he played for his country at the U20 World Cup Finals in Egypt.
Ryan was originally spotted with Parrahill Knights and signed for Hearts in June 2006 after graduating from the South Australia Institute of Sports. The club's former U19 captain made his senior debut in May 2008 against Gretna and shortly afterwards, he signed a new five-year contract.
Ryan was a regular on the bench last season and in October 2009 he joined Ayr United on a three-month loan, which has been extended until the end of the season.
