A right-sided midfielder from Bishopbriggs, Paul joined Hearts from Rossvale Boys Club and then graduated from the club's Academy in July 2006. Paul was promoted to the bench this season and eventually made his senior debut on 28 November 2009 when Hearts won 2-1 at Kilmarnock in the Clydesdale Bank Premier League. The promising playmaker then earned a contract extension from January 2010 before making his first start for Hearts against Celtic at Parkhead the following month.
