A young striker from West Lothian, Gary earned a full professional contract in July 2006 after progressing through the Hearts Academy.

He made his senior debut in March 2007 and came back into the squad at the end of 2007-08, when he hit 2 goals in 6 appearances. At that time, the Scottish Youth international won the SPL Graduate Award for making a significant breakthrough.

In 2008-09, the lively attacker suffered ankle and hamstring problems but in December Gary made a welcome return to the senior squad and of course, he scored a memorable goal in the Scottish Cup victory over Hibs at Easter Road.

Despite a succession of niggling injuries, Gary regularly featured in the team last season and at the end of the campaign, he had recorded five goals in a career total of 39 competitive appearances. More injuries this term, though, curtailed his first team involvement in the opening months of the campaign.
