Paulo's frustration
Disappointed Hearts boss Paulo Sergio was desperately unhappy with how his team threw away a 1-0 lead against ten-man St Johnstone in today's William Hill Scottish Cup encounter at Tynecastle.
The Jambos took the lead with a strike from winger David Templeton in the 10th minute before a Cillian Sheridan goal 13 minutes from time earned a deserved equaliser for the Perth Saints, only four minutes after Dave Mackay earned a second yellow card for fouling the counter-attacking Templeton.
With Hearts contriving to lose the match from a goal up and a man up, Paulo admitted his frustration at facing an unwanted midweek replay in Perth (date tbc). Paulo said: "Generally I am not pleased at all with the performance. St Johnstone are a team who fight for everything. We did not give them any chances to score but we made a mistake and it cost us. Playing with an extra man, we should always look to keep the ball."
"Some periods we did this well, some we did not. But perhaps this is because it's been so long since we played. Some players were out of pace, out of rhythm and out of confidence. St Johnstone will be happy with their replay."
Hearts looked to be denied a certain penalty in the second half when Dave Mackay clearly handled the ball in the area, only for referee Craig Thomson to wave away the vociferous claims from the home support and the touchline. Paulo said: "I felt this was a definite penalty. I don't want to criticise the referee but it's clear for all to see. Also I have to say when their player was sent off, I don't understand why the referee didn't play on. We have four against one and the referee stops. If he wants to send the player off after, then that is fine but we should always be looking to continue the play first.
Finally, David Templeton had to be replaced in stoppage time with a knock, however Paulo was confident that the tricky winger wouldn't be out of action for very long, saying: "Templeton got an injury a few weeks ago and he is struggling with a small pain that comes and goes but I'm hopeful that he'll be alright."
