Fans rallying call
Fans chief Stevie Kilgour has urged Hearts supporters to back the team in appropriate fashion in tomorrow's Clydesdale Bank Premier League meeting with Celtic at Parkhead.
The Jambos head along the M8 this weekend looking to respond after the disappointment against St Johnstone and fans can play a key role with their backing of Paulo Sergio's team.
"We call on the Hearts supporters to get right behind the team and support them as vociferously as we can, but please stick to Hearts songs," said Stevie, secretary of the Federation of Hearts Supporters Clubs.
"We have plenty of good songs to sing in support of our team. Let's sing them loud and proud and not let our club down."
Stevie was speaking to Hearts News after attending a meeting with the Football Co-ordination Unit for Scotland (FOCUS).
FOCUS is a new police unit set up to ensure that football supporters enjoy a safe and enjoyable matchday experience, while clamping down on any violent or disorderly behaviour.
"It was stressed at the FOCUS meeting that the group's main aim is that all supporters attending matches have a good time and go home safely," added Stevie.
"At the top of the agenda was the new anti-sectarian legislation which is currently going through the Scottish Parliament. As we know the proposed new legislation has been questioned as to leaving too many 'grey areas'. The Unit is promising to take a step back and adopt a less 'in your face' policy for now and will only react where fans persist in violent, threatening, sectarian or offensive behaviour.
"They are calling for football supporters to reciprocate this by dropping the type of singing/chanting that we all know should be a thing of the past.
"Whilst the police cannot state exactly what songs are deemed acceptable or not, the advice is that if you think what you are singing, chanting or shouting may be deemed as sectarian, it most likely is.
"What they can say for certain is the singing of certain songs has led to criminal convictions in the past. If others are singing such songs please don't join in or react in kind to opposition fans."
