Match Report: Hearts 0-2 Wolves
Friendly: Hearts 0-2 Wolves
From Hearts News at Tynecastle
Wolves scored twice in the opening 20 minutes to secure victory in a competitive friendly at Tynecastle.
The Jambos went into their fourth match in seven days against Mick McCarthy's Wolves side who will look to make their mark in the Barclays Premier League this season.
With Hearts securing two victories on the road at Gillingham and Millwall respectively the match was poised to be an open and lively affair.
Hearts found themselves one nil down inside four minutes after a Greg Halford free-kick looped its way round the Jambos wall and into Marian Kello's net.
After 16 minutes the Jambos were two down after a fairly innocuous throw-in spun into the box and Stephen Ward was allowed to leap above the Hearts defence and head the ball home. Wolves were comfortable with their lead but Jim Jefferies decided to change things around. Before the restart he brought Ryan Stevenson back from supporting Elliott, into the midfield.
The home side, in their smart new kit, looked livelier and came back into the match. Craig Thomson had a long range effort on goal after 25 minutes but Hahnemann was on hand to save. Suso was next to test the Wolves keeper with a shot form just inside the box, the power on the ball forced Hahnemann.
Wolves continued to press Hearts into the latter stages of the half but it was Ryan Stevenson who almost got the last word. The tenacious midfielder drilled the ball low from 20 yards out and saw his shot just slip wide of goal.
After the interval it was much of the same with Wolves content to sit back and take opportunities as they came and Hearts pushing to get on the score sheet. Jim Jefferies brought on Ryan McGowan and Jason Thomson for Mrowiec and Black, which allowed Suso to push up and support Elliot, who had been playing as the lone striker.
Minutes after the switch Suso whipped a cross in to Elliot who had eluded the Wolves defence, the resulting header however was dragged wide.
Kevin Doyle replied with a thundering shot soon after, which would have made it 3-0 for the Midlands outfit, but he was denied by the woodwork on this occasion.
The biggest applause of the night went to former skipper Christopher Berra, who returned to the club for the first time since his move in January 2009 as a substitute.
