Heart of Midlothian Football Club (Hearts) today becomes the first Scottish football club to reveal it has launched reduced-fat pies as standard across all stadium catering facilities.

Analytical reports have confirmed the reduction of fat content by 40% compared to the previous traditional scotch pie recipe. There is now just 4.6 grams of fat per 100 grams.

Running for several weeks, the new pies comply with tough standards on healthy foods.

Hearts sells 140,000 pies every season, the humble offering by far the most popular cuisine on offer around Tynecastle Stadium.

Azure general manager Graeme Pacitti, who manages Hearts retail and hospitality catering operations said: "Hearts has a good reputation for the quality of its food served via kiosks and in our hospitality suites.

"This new development means that supporters can enjoy a tasty pie, without the guilt that comes with such a pleasure."

Ross Hamilton, sales manager of suppliers McGhee's said: "We asked our customers for their opinion, we had a lot of blind tasting and a lot of positive feedback.

"The new pies are proving very popular and we are delighted that a club of Hearts stature has been so supportive of the project."

Jambo Alistair Inglis of Corstorphine was quick to give the pies the thumbs-up during yesterday's Clydesdale Bank Premier League clash with Hamilton, saying: "I think the catering is very good and I usually eat three or four pies at each game!"

This latest healthy initiative at Hearts follows the launch earlier this season of the hugely popular meal deals for kids at Tynecastle which include a fresh fruit bag and colouring book and crayons.
