Manager Jim Jefferies reckons he'll be in a better position to judge his Hearts players in another month's time.

JJ is still adjusting to his new surroundings after being appointed as Csaba Laszlo's successor and still getting to know his squad.

"Two weeks no time to assess a squad as you can't make rash decisions on players," he told the media at this morning's press conference at Riccarton ahead of Saturday's clash with Falkirk in the Clydesdale Bank Premier League.

"You have first impressions but I'll have a better idea in six weeks or so who I see being here as I plan for the future.

"We're out of the cups so there is no expectation there but we have to finish as high up the league as we can.

"We have to address the lack of goals but the players need time to adjust gradually. I'll learn more and more about the players every day and with every game. It's what I've always done in 22 years in management - finding out what's wrong and putting it right.

"I can't change what I want to do in a fortnight. I have to assess everybody and see what's here and learn what the guys can do and if they can fit into the way I want the team."

Jim will make an emotional return to the home dug out for the first time in over nine years on Saturday when bottom club Falkirk arrive in Gorgie.

He has appeciated the warm welcome from the supporters but knows it's results which will determine how popualr he is this time around.

"Most people have the opinion that they are delighted to see me back but it's not just about coming back, it's about giving them what they want," he said.

"They know the last time we built a side playing a certain way and we have to try to do that again. It's a case of trying to get the best we can from what we've got and building on that.

"There is a nucleus of good players to build a side around and lot of good youngsters coming through.

"The spirit was a bit flat when I first came in but that might have been a reaction to what had happened. I noticed it right away but people had been telling me that's the way it had been.

"We need to foster that team spirit. I've always had it at clubs and it's part and parcel of the job. Gary Locke came up the other day and said the atmosphere was night and day compared to first day we walked in. I expected that but we have to get the spirit on the pitch as well as off it."
