Hearts 4-1 Aberdeen

"We had taken time to suss things out and had taken a bit of time to build a side. We could see the team was well balanced and equipped to put in a really good season.

"It was all about getting off to a good start and a 4-1 win over a club of the stature of Aberdeen gave everyone a huge lift and the confidence to go on.

"That season we ran Rangers and Celtic very close. I think were the first team to get close to the Old Firm in a long time and put in a challenge like that.

"It was a great performance and set us up for the rest of the season. Aberdeen were a big club and we gained momentum from that match.

"They took the lead through Mike Newell but some of our football was great and that result was probably the catalyst for that campaign."
