Hearts went down 3-0 at St Mary's Stadium in front of 5,000 supporters including 300 Jambos
Marius Zaliukas took the captaincy as Hearts opened well against Coca-Cola League One opposition, Southampton.
It was the Saints though who took the lead after 12 minutes when Lallana took a square ball from John on the edge of the box and drilled a low shot past the dive of Balogh. Murty then crossed for Lallana again a minute later and the midfielder should have done better as he clipped his shot over the bar from six yards.
Laryea Kingston looked in the mood and he was instrumental in all Hearts good movement. Suso also looked lively and had a 35 yard shot which narrowly missed the far post. Witteveen was also working hard up front and Obua was keen to see the ball on the left.
Zaliukas came close after 25 minutes after a well measured Kingston cross but the big Lithuanian was just inches away from connecting.
Hearts opened the second half in lively fashion and a driving Stewart run led to a free kick which Obua struck well but Davis made an excellent save to parry the ball away.
Michael Stewart then made two telling passes sending both Suso and Witteveen on attacking runs.
But despite positive play from Hearts, Southampton made it two nil after 65 minutes. Raziak glancing a header from only three yards after indecisiveness in the Hearts defence.
Balogh then saved Hearts twice in two minutes. With 15 minutes to go Nade and Novikovas freshened the attack.
However a throw from Balogh was intercepted by Lallana who crossed to Raziak who headed in from five yards. 3-0 and game over.
Southampton closed out the game with little threat from Hearts in the final ten minutes.
