Hearts goalkeeper Janos Balogh knows just how tough the season ahead will be but the big Hungarian is more than ready for the challenge.

Speaking before leaving the club's German training camp yesterday, Janos believes that he and his team-mates are starting afresh.

He said: "This is not the end this is the beginning because there will be new players in the team so we have lots of work to do.

"We lost three or four good players but I think we can bring in new good players.

"This pre-season the manager is trying to teach the team tactics and movement. I heard Csaba was a good manager before and I know him now and he is a very good manager. He is a very good strategist and he will make a good team again."

The former Debrecen keeper is now firmly focused on the season ahead and he has a personal score to settle

Stressing that Europe is firmly on his mind, he added: "It is a big opportunity for me because when I played for Debrecen and we played qualification games, we couldn't qualify for the group stages so I think with this team I have a big opportunity.

"I played against Bordeaux in 2001, Metalurgs in 2005, Aalburg in 2006. It was painful to lose and I hope we can take one step forward.

"If we get to the group stages we can play a lot of European games and our young team can learn from this experience."

Janos, who celebrated the birth of his first child earlier this year, has been quick to adapt to Scotland after the culture shock of moving to a new country to build a career with Hearts.

"Everything was new for me - the traffic, people, way of thinking and the Scottish Premier League as well," he smiled. "The season was very long for me because in my home country of Hungary we have a break of one month. Here in Scotland we don't have a break so I was very tired.

"But I was enjoying every moment because we had a very good team with good players and we played well. We got a lot of good results and I hope we can continue this work and I hope we can keep this going."

He is also keen on competition which is an attribute that helped him secure his place between the sticks.

"When I came to Scotland I missed three games and Marian played and that's why I was on the bench," Janos continued.

"I was waiting for my opportunity but then Marian was injured against Hibs and I came in against Hibs.

"Then I played a total of 21 games with Cup games as well. Then I broke my ribs and I was in big pain. I couldn't train for two and a half weeks and Marian played well and then he played the last five games."

Janos also had words of praise for predecessor and Hearts legend Craig Gordon.

"I think every player knows Craig Gordon is a very, very good goalkeeper and that is why he is number one at the Scotland national team," he said.

"Here at Hearts we have three goalkeepers, Jamie MacDonald, Marian Kello and me, and I think we do good hard work and we try to do the best we can."
