U19s coach Darren Murray today insisted there were plenty of positives to take from the weekend's Keyline Tournament in Oban despite Hearts failing to win any of their five games.

The wee Jambos produced a strong defensive performance throughout but were made to count the cost for not converting the numerous chances created.

Although disappointed not to find the back of the net in the tournament - which was won by Alloa Athletic - Darren took plenty of encouragement from the overall performance of his youngsters in the five short games played.

"We didn't have our full side out by any stretch of the imagination as there was a mixture of reserves and U19s but not scoring in two and a half hours of football isn't ideal," he said.

"We did have a lot of chances. But we defended well and it looks like we'll have a solid back four this season."

To underline the displays of the back line against Hamilton, Oban Saints, Dundee United, Alloa Athletic and St Johnstone, Conrad Balatoni was named Player of the Tournament after a succession of excellent performances.

"I think that was about right," added Darren. "I thought he was outstanding.

"That was just one of a number of positives I can take from the tournament. We must improve in the final third but overall I wasn't too disappointed.

"It was a good work out for the boys in warm weather so their fitness levels will have improved. And it was a great experience for them to come up against the first-team players of teams such as Dundee United."

Darren takes his U19s to West Calder on Saturday to face West Calder United in a testimonial for Wayne Greig (kick-off 3pm).

"This will really be our first full U19s match as there won't be any reserves for that one and it's a game we're looking forward to," he said.
