Andy's handy debut - Francis
Former England star Trevor Francis today praised Hearts winger Andrew Driver after his impressive debut for Stuart Pearce's side in the UEFA U21 European Championship clash with Germany.
The Gorgie ace, who had missed the earlier Group B games against Spain and Finland through injury, played 70 minutes of last night's encounter and impressed with his willingness to run at the German defence whenever the opportunity arose.
After watching the action unfold in Halmstad, ex-England striker Francis was quick to highlight the 21-year-old's contribution as Pearce's side booked their place in the semi-finals of the tournament as group winners - the Germans also qualified as runners-up.
"I liked the way he was positive in everything he did," said Francis, who won 52 caps for his country in a career spanning nine years from 1977-1986.
"He was looking to get at the full-back and was quite comfortable on either foot as well as being quite aggressive.
"Considering it was his first game, he looked very relaxed and didn't show any nerves. That was oozing through the side. Confidence comes in a winning side and they all looked comfortable with everything they were doing."
Pearce also took time to praise Andrew for his display last night and the winger will be hoping to have done enough to remain in his manager's plans as England prepare for a last-four showdown against either Italy, Sweden, Belarus or Serbia, who battle it out for Group A glory this evening.
