Alfie Conn was the senior member of Hearts' legendary 'Terrible Trio' forward line that petrified opposition defences throughout the Fifties.

The inside right was just 5ft 7ins but he made good use of his low centre of gravity to turn defenders, while his stocky build meant that he was difficult to dispossess.

Conn was also a fine striker of the ball, as he demonstrated with a sweet shot for the third goal in Hearts' 1956 Scottish Cup Final triumph.

That season was the most fruitful of his career, yielding 27 goals in just 38 appearances.

His appearances were restricted in Hearts' championship year of 1957-58, but he still contributed four goals in five games.

In September 1958, he was sold to Raith Rovers for £2,250. He later moved to South Africa to play for Johannesburg Ramblers.

His son, Alfie Jr, also a skilful winger, went on to become the first footballer to play for both Celtic and Rangers.
